LARP in Tourism (Tourism LARP) is our next subject. A creative and fun way to use LARP in different tourism areas. There are some similarities with Erasmus + models – participants’ low LARP experience and motivation.
Portal 8 LARP convention brought us one more experienced Larper – Daniel Fidelman. He showed us how LARP found his place in Tourism and gave us an extra point of view.
Tourism LARP – Daniel Fidelman experience
In his presentation, Daniel included examples of different Tourism LARP models and shared his own experience. Herodium model, Curious Corridor Model, Election Model, Andreas’ model, Archaeological Museum Model are some examples of how, for different touristic events, you can remodel the LARP structure.
Challenges that Tourism LARP organizers can expect are also quite similar to Erasmus + challenges (participants who came to be entertained on their vacation, many of them not interested in characters and learning LARP, not open to behaving silly in public as a part of the role, etc.)
Daniel shared a few methods of how you can deal with those challenges:
- Physical activity – The body movement influences the mind. It increases openness, motivation for participation, and fresh ideas.
- Intrusive acting – Crew actors acting has to brake participants’ private space, move them, to intrude them, and to intimidate them a bit.
- Self-Expression– It’s essential to give people space to talk. Crew actors are giving participants some tasks that can be solved verbally. That can help participants to develop their characters.
- Choices – If you give participants an opportunity for an important choice to make, they will tie themselves to the story very well.
Tourism LARP Models
During different projects, Daniel had a chance to use different Tourism LARP models. Therefore, he presented different models by explaining their benefits. Models are listed below with a short description.
Herodium model is held in King Herod’s desert palace. In this model, crew actors try to get a judgment from participants to pick sides and to get involved emotionally. Therefore, it includes actors with strong emotional prompts. Space design is on a large scale to make a layer of magic and fantasy on the vast castle. Also, actors have stylistic costumes recognizable for the theme.
Curious Corridor Model
The Curious Corridor Model is very close to actual LARP. A fixed dramatic start opening scene is showing who is against who. There are 5 stations for participants to explore without a fixed order, tailored towards a wide range of activities (NPC Interactions, various riddles, exploration, and reading). It is finishing with a fixed end scene with fixed choices and diverging ending – gives them an opportunity to shape the end by giving them a chance to decide who are they going to support.
The Election model was formed for municipality elections for the city of Jerusalem. Above all, the goal was to promote democracy, give a festival feeling, and to have fun. Organizers are creating and presenting political candidates through historical figures of Jerusalem. Two or more directly opposing factions must be included. Participants have a mission against the opposite faction with defined tasks and goals. Participants get a sense of achievement by completing the mission.
Andreas’ model is very suitable for tour guiding purposes. Visitors are active participants and can give their input. A tour guide is always in-character. For instance, the tour guide is talking from his character’s time period, telling visitors what he sees, out of his perspective. The character has a personal story; he gives hints, asking for advice from visitors, etc. Actors come to represent more aspects of the setting by interaction (guards, thief, etc.).
Archaeological Museum Model
Archaeological Museum model is useful on an occasion where people are learning about human history and getting to know more details about the archeological matter. Includes a single, complex, untrusted, and somewhat antagonistic guide.
