In the previous article, we introduced you to the first subject of the Live Action Role Playing games (LARP) convention in Zagreb, Mike Pohjola’s “Writing for Participation”. Since you have some new insights based on that subject, we hope that you became more enthusiastic about the LARP games projects.
If the assumption above is true, we believe that your next question could be – how to start with LARP on my own and not die of hunger?
Well, you are in the right spot on the Geexus page. Simon Svensson, the second speaker of the LARP convention, shared with us his real-life LARP experience.
About Simon Svensson
Simon is coming from Sweeden. He is a LARP designer, writer and one of the founding members of non-profit organization Atropos. He also ran Vampire the Masquerade campaign LARP for 13 years and organized other LARPs with the Monitor Celestra in 2013.
Since founding Atropos, his focus was on creating stories and worlds. Also, not to his great joy, he ended up doing all economy, marketing, websites and administration parts of the business too. Why? Because it is a very important part of life in any organization, so is also a part of the LARP organization.
LARP organization from scratch
Simon was talking in a very grounded way about all the important steps you need to make to start doing what you love and not to go broke or/and break.
He pointed out the main questions to ask yourself before starting an organization from scratch and guide us through them:
- What do you want to do? What kind of organization do you want to run?
- Why do you want to do it? An important question that is saving you from later conflicts or unnecessary tensions.
- Who are you doing it for? Yourselves, clients, players, community…?
- How will you do it? He went through the following points and steps: Money, Audience, Location, Administration, and Creativity.
Simon also underlined the importance of getting to know each team member from the very beginning and explained why. What does each team member like and doesn’t like to do or what is their final goal with LARP?
He is passionate about LARP and developing a successful organization. At the same time, he is taking care of his team members by ensuring that everyone is doing what they love and keeping them out of the burnout zone. Remember! If you like your job and you are having fun, you can still have a burnout.
General tips for LARP creators and conclusion
To sum up all the advice he gave us about how to take care of your team and how to build your organization, he also explained a few general tips:
- Be honest about yourselves
- Be ruthless
- “Only darlings” design
- Do it your way
- Be humble
- Ignore Feedback that doesn’t align with your goals
LARP fans had a few questions about books and websites where they can find more information about LARP and how to lead organizations, about feedbacks to players, investments in future LARP projects and many others.
We could go on and on about what Simon said since he was very detailed, but it would ruin your Simon experience.
The best cure for your curiosity would be to watch the clip above and learn a lot about the LARP world.
Enjoy! We definitely did!
